Lesedi Local Municipality (LLM) has dismissed claims circulating on social media that its water supply has been poisoned, urging residents to disregard unverified information and remain calm.

In a statement released following the circulation of a voice note in various community groups, the municipality said it takes public concerns seriously but strongly refuted allegations of water contamination.

“Lesedi Local Municipality wants to reassure our community that we take these concerns seriously and we further would like to refute claims that our water has been poisoned. We want to warn people not to be alarmists over unverified information,” the municipality said.

The clarification comes amid ongoing water supply challenges affecting several areas within the municipality.

Residents in Ratanda, Obed Nkosi and Heidelberg Extensions 23 and 26 have complained for several days about dry taps, raising frustration and concern within affected communities.

LLM emphasised that while water supply interruptions have been experienced, the quality of the water remains safe for consumption. The municipality assured residents that its water supply is not contaminated and poses no risk to public health.

“LLM water supply remains safe, uncontaminated, and healthy for consumption. The health and well-being of our residents and businesses are our top priority, and we will continue to monitor our water quality rigorously,” the statement read.

Providing an update on efforts to stabilise the water supply, the municipality reported progress at its pumping infrastructure. According to LLM, an increase in intake pressure was recorded earlier in the day.

“Kindly note, today we have noticed an increase in the intake pressure to 350 kPa. Although the reservoirs are still low, we started one pump at Heidelberg main pump station so that we can start filling the system,” the municipality said in a recent post.

Lesedi Local Municipality reiterated its commitment to keeping residents informed through official communication channels and cautioned against the spread of misinformation, which could cause unnecessary panic. Residents were encouraged to rely on verified municipal updates as work continues to restore normal water supply levels in affected areas.
