Lesufi Announces Cabinet Changes as EFF Takes Over Finance in Gauteng Coalition

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has announced a reshuffle of the Provincial Executive Committee (MECs), marking a significant shift in the province’s coalition government.

Speaking during a provincial cabinet media briefing, Lesufi confirmed that the changes follow engagements with political parties represented in the Provincial Legislature.

The move aims to strengthen cooperation within the coalition government led by the African National Congress (ANC).

A key development in the reshuffle is the inclusion of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in the provincial executive. As part of the agreement, the EFF will now lead the Finance department—one of the most critical portfolios in the provincial government.

To accommodate the new coalition partner, former Education MEC Matome Chiloane has been removed from the executive.

Premier Lesufi expressed appreciation for Chiloane’s service, praising his role in key departments. “We thank Mr Chiloane for his outstanding contribution in Education and Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture,” Lesufi said.

The reshuffle signals a new phase in Gauteng’s coalition governance, as parties seek to work together to deliver services and maintain political stability in the province.
