Local politician leads girl empowerment drive in Duduza

Sharon Sitha and her Action SA colleagues recently visited Duduza Primary School to distribute much-needed sanitary pads to female students in Grades 4 to 7.

As the provincial secretary of the Disability Forum and former Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Health and Social Development in Ekurhuleni, Sitha’s initiative addresses a critical hygiene need while promoting dignity and well-being among young learners.

They also organized an engaging discussion with the students, creating a welcoming space where they could openly explore their questions about menstrual cycles.

This intimate gathering allowed the young participants to delve into the changes their bodies are currently experiencing and those they will encounter in the future, fostering a sense of understanding and empowerment as they navigate this important aspect of their development.

Speaking to the school head of the Department, Mrs. Mkhwanazi showed immense gratitude for the efforts they have been shown.

“This is not the first time they have shown their commitment to supporting our students. Last year, they generously donated bright, sturdy school shoes for the learners, ensuring that they had the proper footwear to attend classes comfortably. Today, they continued their incredible support by bringing essential sanitary pads, which are crucial for the well-being and dignity of our students. Their ongoing contributions are making a significant difference in the lives of these young learners.”

Sitha also added that initiatives like these are very close to her heart. She is on a mission to address the inadequacies in our communities and schools. She will continue to do what she can.

The donation highlights Action SA’s ongoing commitment to supporting education and empowering girls in local communities.
