Local rapper Onfroy sets his sights on stardom
Teboho Michael Mokoena, also known as Onfroy, is a hip hop musician from Ratanda township in Sedibeng.
Currently studying Sound technology at South West Gauteng College at Roodepoort West Campus, Mokoena (21) has been working on his craft for over eight years.
Speaking to Mapepeza, Onfroy shared his journey in the music scene.
“I started recording my first mixtape in 2015 which was named ‘The New Stunna’ which consist of 10 songs. I also used to perform on events such as beauty contests and Valentines Day events in my hood Ratanda. Later I started doing free performances outside my area and features too,” he explained.
A year later, Onfroy came back with a single song called ‘You better Know’ which was mixed and mastered by Owzito (Tshepo Radebe), with the beat produced by Nhlanhla ‘Verse-B’ Mazibuko.
“The song was really nice. That’s when people started noticing me and we shot a music video for the song. The video went popular especially at Ratanda Secondary,” said Onfroy.
After taking a break for a couple of years, Onfroy released a single and a mixtape named Sympathy. In the EP, he has worked with an artist from the United States. His most recent project, ‘Untold Stories’ is ready to listen online and has been featured on Slikour On Life.
His single, ‘Fine than Before’ is available on Spotify with over 18,000 streams so far.
Onfroy describes his sound as Emo Rap and sees himself as the rockstar behind it. He is inspired by rappers like Machine Gun Kelly, Trippie Redd and Young Thug.
Looking forward, Mokoena has set his sights on working with Patrickxxlee and Ricky Tyler.
Recently he is set to release two new singles that he plans to premiere on local and national radio stations.
