Mpox Cases Rise in Gauteng: Public Urged to Stay Vigilant

The Department of Health has confirmed three new cases of mpox in Ekurhuleni, Gauteng, raising the total number of recorded cases in the country to 31 since the outbreak began in May 2024.

The latest cases include a 38-year-old man, a 14-year-old boy, and a 33-year-old woman. None of them have traveled to regions experiencing mpox outbreaks, indicating local transmission of the virus.

The affected individuals are currently in self-isolation and receiving medical care.

The Department of Health has activated outbreak response teams to conduct contact tracing and prevent further spread.

Mpox (formerly known as Monkey Pox) is a viral disease known for causing rashes, fever, muscle aches, and swollen glands, is typically mild with a low fatality rate.

Health officials emphasize that anyone can contract mpox, regardless of age or background, and urge the public to be cautious.

Additionally, all three patients tested positive for herpes simplex virus (HSV), which spreads through skin contact, including kissing and unprotected sex. While treatable, HSV remains incurable.

Residents experiencing symptoms such as a persistent rash, fever, or body aches are encouraged to seek medical attention immediately.

The Department of Health continues to monitor the situation closely.
