Multiple shacks burn to the ground in Pomona plots
A group of shacks caught fire in the early hours of Tuesday (August 16) at the Malan Informal Settlement in the Pomona Plots near Kempton Park.
The fire started at around 01:40 AM and the reports from dwellers say they are suspecting that the blaze started by a candle. The cause is still yet unknown.
“On initial scene assessment about 26 shack were well alight. Incident Command system was established and Action Plan was implemented,” said the Metro Emergency department.
Firefighters used their plan to deploy two major pumps and a Water tanker was used to contain the flames. Working together with the Grass Unit, the firefighters managed to limit the blaze to not go in other directions. After the fire was contained, the team went to look for people trapped in the shacks.

“We established search and rescue of 6 crews, two searching for victims and extend of fire. The scene of fire was metigatated,” said the DEMS.
Fortunately, no fatalities were reported. Only one man was attended by medical personnel due to spoke inhalation. No other serious injuries were reported.
