New Johannesburg Mayor Elected
In Johannesburg, a new mayor has been elected after the previous one was removed.
Thapelo Amad from Al Jama-ah won the vote with 138 votes, while Mpho Phalatse received 81 votes and Funzi Ngobeni from Action SA got 46 votes.
This is a big job for Amad and he wants everyone to work together to make the city better.
He is also the first Muslim mayor of Johannesburg.
Amad wants to fix the city’s problems like fixing roads, cleaning up trash and making sure everyone has clean water and electricity.
The ANC in Johannesburg also plans to contest the mayoral position in the future.
Thapelo Amad, the new mayor of Johannesburg, said he was humbled by the opportunity to lead the city.
He thanked the councillors for their support and asked for it to continue.
“This is a bigger task given to me and I believe that with unity we will defeat,” he said.
Amad also made history by being elected as the first Muslim mayor of South Africa’s economic hub.
He said, “It has nothing to do with the religion.
There are no racial lines.
We are humanity and we need to serve.”
Amad also vowed to tackle the backlog in fixing the city’s crumbling infrastructure.
“We will see to make sure that the most basic services are extended to all corners of the city.
Refuse collection, potholes, sewage spillage.
There is no justification as to why our people should endure the stench of raw sewage running down the streets in a city like hours,” he said.
The African National Congress (ANC) in Johannesburg also confirmed that once negotiations with the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have successfully concluded it will contest the mayoral position in the city.
Morero, an ANC member, said the ANC was committed to reaching a consensus with the EFF.
“I’m still the candidate mayor for the ANC and once the negotiations have been concluded there will be a handover process and the ANC will take Joburg and EFF will take over Ekurhuleni.”
