Police Investigate Double Murder at Zonkizizwe Taxi Rank
Police have launched a murder investigation following a deadly shooting at the Zonkizizwe taxi rank in the early hours of Thursday morning. The incident, believed to be linked to ongoing taxi violence, claimed the lives of two individuals — a security officer and a member of the local taxi association.
According to reports, a white Toyota Fortuner carrying approximately 10 armed men stormed the taxi rank and opened fire on security personnel stationed at the scene. During the attack, one of the security vehicles was set alight, while another was riddled with bullet holes.
Police confirmed that a rifle was recovered and has been seized for forensic testing as part of the investigation. As of Thursday afternoon, no arrests had been made.
In a separate but possibly related incident on the same day, a multi-agency police operation involving members from the Highway and Hillbrow tracing units, along with the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department Tactical Response Unit (JMPD TRU), led to the arrest of three suspects at a warehouse in Dawnpark.
The suspects were found in possession of an R5 rifle, ammunition, and three magazines. Police say the firearm will undergo ballistic testing to determine if it may have been used in any criminal activities, including the Zonkizizwe shooting.
Authorities have urged members of the public with any information that could assist in the investigation to contact the Crime Stop Line at 08600 10111 or submit anonymous tip-offs via the MySAPS App, available on any smartphone.
Police investigations continue.
