Sasol Renews Commitment to Communities Through Secunda Stadium Upgrade

Sasol has renewed its commitment to uplifting communities in the Govan Mbeki Municipality (GMM) as ageing infrastructure and years of service delivery challenges continue to affect public facilities in the area.

For more than a decade, residents of eMbalenhle and Secunda have seen key recreational spaces fall into disrepair, raising concerns about safety and the lack of usable venues for community and sporting activities.

Facilities such as the eMbalenhle Stadium and several local parks have deteriorated to the point where many can no longer host events or gatherings. As a result, the Secunda Stadium has become one of the few remaining venues suitable for schools, sports teams, and social activities.

In response to these challenges, Sasol has intensified its investment in community infrastructure through its Corporate Social Investment (CSI) programme.

The company said its efforts are aimed at creating safer, more vibrant neighbourhoods, while also strengthening its long-standing relationship with the communities around its operations.

Sasol believes that supporting sports and recreation is not only about upgrading buildings, but also about promoting values such as teamwork, discipline, and resilience among young people.

One of the key projects is the multi-year upgrade of the Secunda Stadium, launched under Sasol’s Theory of Change development framework.

The project has made steady progress since 2023, starting with the replacement of 250 stadium chairs and the installation of new structural steel for improved safety. In 2024, another 300 seats were replaced.

This year, Sasol upgraded 865 more chairs, bringing the total number of new seats to 1,415. The company said it still plans to replace the remaining 1,011 chairs to ensure the stadium is modern, safe, and fully functional.

Sasol noted that the stadium upgrade is not only about restoring physical infrastructure, but also about helping rebuild community pride.

By improving facilities used for school sports and local events, the company hopes to encourage youth participation, support local talent, and provide a space where families can come together.

The energy company said it views investments in community infrastructure as investments in the future of GMM. Through ongoing projects such as the Secunda Stadium upgrades, Sasol aims to help build stronger neighbourhoods and contribute to the long-term development of the municipality.
