SASSA Warns Beneficiaries About New Grant Card Scam
The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) and Postbank have issued a strong warning to social grant beneficiaries about a growing scam targeting their grant cards and PIN numbers.
In a statement released on Friday (May 30), Postbank revealed that fraudsters are pretending to be Postbank officials and approaching beneficiaries at their homes. These scammers claim that there is a problem with the beneficiary’s card, convincing them to hand over their Postbank black or SASSA gold cards and PINs.
Postbank says this is a scam and urges beneficiaries to remain alert.
“There is nothing wrong with the black Postbank cards or the SASSA gold cards. Both cards will continue working for grant payments beyond 31 May 2025,” Postbank said.
Warning Signs of the Scam:
- Scammers arrive without an appointment.
- They ask for your card or PIN.
- They may wear fake Postbank uniforms or drive branded vehicles.
What to Do if They Visit:
- Quietly alert your neighbours and community members.
- Report the incident to the police.
- Contact Postbank immediately on 0800 53 54 55.
Postbank also warned that it will not visit any beneficiary’s home unless the visit was arranged through official channels.
“Beneficiaries should not be tricked into switching from their current SASSA or Postbank cards to other banks. Even if a person claims to be a government official, do not follow such advice,” the statement added.
Postbank reassures beneficiaries that it remains committed to offering safe and secure services for grant payments.
For any questions or to report suspicious activity, call Postbank on 0800 53 54 55.
Stay safe, and never share your PIN.
