Sedibeng SAPS Nets 22 Suspects in Easter Roadblock Operation on N3

Sedibeng District police have arrested 22 suspects and issued traffic fines worth nearly R9 000 during a multi-disciplinary law enforcement operation along the Heidelberg N3 route ahead of the busy Easter period.

The operation, known as Operation Paseka, was conducted on Thursday, 2 April 2026, under the leadership of District Commissioner Major General Nkhensani Mukwevho.

The initiative forms part of heightened safety measures aimed at reducing road accidents and curbing criminal activity during peak holiday travel.

Police officers in a briefing before the Operation Paseka got underway

The operation began with a parade at 08:30 and continued until 13:00. It was led on the ground by Brigadier Ndwandwe and brought together various law enforcement agencies and stakeholders, including the Department of Home Affairs, Gauteng Traffic Police, Lesedi Traffic officials, Community Policing structures, and specialised SAPS units.

A total of 172 personnel were deployed, supported by 74 vehicles, in a coordinated effort to enforce the law and ensure compliance along one of Gauteng’s busiest transport routes.

Arrests and seizures

During the operation, police arrested 20 undocumented foreign nationals from countries including Mozambique, Malawi, Lesotho, and Zimbabwe. Two additional suspects were arrested for possession of drugs.

Authorities also confiscated quantities of illegal substances, including nyaope and crystal meth.

Searches and compliance checks

Law enforcement officials carried out extensive stop-and-search activities, which included:

691 individuals searched

152 vehicles stopped and searched

7 firearms tested

87 individuals verified through the police system

70 vehicles verified

Traffic enforcement

Traffic officials issued 24 fines for various violations, amounting to a total of R8 900.

Ongoing operations

SAPS said the success of Operation Paseka highlights its continued commitment to protecting communities and ensuring safer roads, especially during high-traffic periods like Easter.

Police have confirmed that similar operations will continue across the Sedibeng District as part of efforts to combat crime, enforce the law, and maintain public safety.
