Shelter for Vaal homeless opened
Doing their part in commemoration of yhe International Day of Families on Tuesday, May 31, the Gauteng Department of Social Development launched the park homes shelter for the homeless in Vanderbijlpark.
The event was led by Member of the Executive Council (MEC) of the department, Morakane Mosupyoe, along with officials from the provincial department of health, Emfuleni Local Municipality and SAVF.
The department and the SAVF, because of their similar interests in caring for the vulnerable in society, came together to help the homeless community in the Vaal area with a proper roof over their heads.
The SAVF provides quality, integrated, affordable and accessible services to the vulnerable and marginalized older and disabled persons in its residential and frail care facilities and by means of programmes and projects in the community.
As part of its mandate to care for vulnerable groups in society, the department of Social Development is tasked to place people who are homeless in temporal Homeless Shelters.
The department in collaboration with Municipalities, NPOs, and churches provides various services, such as meals, treatment for substance abuse, security, medical screening, counselling, and reunification with family.
