The body of an unidentified woman was discovered on Wednesday morning, April 2 in Extension 3, Barcelona, near the old Vlakfontein mine in Kwa-Thema.
A passerby, on her way to work, made the grim discovery and immediately alerted local community forums, who in turn notified the police.
According to witnesses, the body appeared to have been at the scene for several days and showed signs of decomposition.
The Kwa-Thema police have confirmed the discovery and opened an inquest docket to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death.
Police officials stated that there were no visible injuries or signs of foul play. A post-mortem examination is pending to determine the exact cause of death.
This case comes shortly after a similar incident earlier in the week, when the body of another woman was found dumped in a separate location in KwaThema.
The deceased in that case was a resident of White City. Her family has since been notified, and her sister was called to the scene to formally identify the body. That investigation is currently being handled by the Springs Police Station.
Attempts to reach the SAPS spokesperson for comment were unsuccessful, as she is currently on leave. The officer standing in for her was also unavailable at the time of publication.
