Young Coders Shine at Heidelberg Public Library Hackathon

A recent 5-day hackathon hosted by the Heidelberg public library together with Envirocentral, and Luora Enterprise saw young people from Lesedi and surrounding areas come together to create innovative apps aimed at benefiting their community.

The event, which drew participants between the ages of 15 and 25, showcased the creativity and talent of the region’s youth. After five days of intense coding and development, three standout apps emerged as winners.

The Head of Department, Lelo Khawula committed that her office together with Envirocentral and Luora Enterprise would help the participants with business incubation.

Taking the top spot was “4 The Future,” an app designed to support students from primary to tertiary levels. This innovative app aims to provide a comprehensive platform for students to access resources, information, and guidance, ultimately enhancing their educational journey. The judges were amazed by this amazing idea and thought of it as a game changer for students.

The second-place winner, “Tsipa-Tsipa,” tackles a pressing issue in the community: illegal electricity connections. This app seeks to curb this problem by providing a safe and legal alternative for residents to access electricity while saving the government millions.

Rounding out the top three was “Impimpi,” a crime prevention app that aims to enhance community safety. This innovative app enables users to report suspicious activity, access emergency services, and stay informed about crime trends in their area.

The Heidelberg Public Library hackathon not only provided a platform for young people to showcase their coding skills but also demonstrated the potential for technology to drive positive change in the community. Congratulations to the winners and all participants on their outstanding achievements.
