60-Year-Old Man Sentenced for Assaulting 12-Year-Old Granddaughter
A 60-year-old man from Katlehong has been sentenced to six years imprisonment after being found guilty of both sexual and physical assault against his 12-year-old granddaughter, marking another step forward in South Africa’s ongoing efforts to combat gender-based violence.
The conviction was secured through the dedicated work of Detective Sergeant Luyanda Mhlambi of the South African Police Service (SAPS) Katlehong, who is attached to the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit.
According to police reports, the incident occurred in August 2023, when the perpetrator inappropriately touched the young victim and physically assaulted her. The assault was interrupted when the victim’s brother heard her screams and intervened, potentially preventing further harm.
The child’s mother reported the incident to authorities, after which Detective Sergeant Mhlambi took immediate action to ensure the victim received appropriate care and support.
Detective Mhlambi’s investigation prioritized the victim’s wellbeing, promptly connecting her with a seasoned Forensic Social Worker for professional assessment. This comprehensive approach to gathering evidence while supporting the victim proved crucial to building a successful case against the perpetrator.
“On Friday, March 14, 2025, the Vosloorus Magistrates’ Court delivered its verdict, finding the accused guilty on all charges. The sentencing included five years direct imprisonment for sexual assault and one year direct imprisonment for assault common. The court ordered that these sentences would run concurrently, resulting in an effective six-year prison term,” explained police spokesperson Constable Sivenkosi Mthwa.
This case highlights the critical work being done by specialized units within SAPS to address crimes involving vulnerable victims, particularly children affected by family violence.
