Chinese Spring Festival Returns to Carnival City with Culture, Food and Fun
The vibrant colours, sounds, and flavours of Chinese culture will once again light up Carnival City as the Chinese Association of South Africa hosts its annual 45th Hong Nong Chinese Spring Festival on Saturday, 6 September 2025.
The event, organised by one of the oldest Chinese organisations in the country—established in 1903—has grown into one of the most anticipated cultural festivals on the local calendar.
Over the decades, the association has not only celebrated heritage and community but also played an active role in social upliftment, supporting charities, cancer awareness drives, and feeding initiatives for the homeless.
This year’s festival promises a memorable day of entertainment and cultural exchange. Families and visitors can look forward to traditional lion and dragon dances, which remain some of the most exciting highlights of the day.
These performances, accompanied by the rhythm of drums and cymbals, are said to bring prosperity, ward off bad luck, and welcome good fortune.
Beyond the performances, attendees will get the chance to indulge in authentic Chinese cuisine and street food delicacies. From savoury favourites to sweet treats, the food stalls will reflect the depth of Chinese culinary traditions. Adding to the festive atmosphere will be craft stalls showcasing unique handmade goods, giving visitors an opportunity to take home a piece of culture.
The festival is designed to appeal to all ages, with live cultural performances and interactive activities that make it both educational and entertaining. Whether it’s families spending the day out, culture enthusiasts eager to learn, or food lovers looking for new flavours, the event offers something for everyone.
“Events like the Spring Festival are more than just celebrations—they bring communities together and strengthen cultural ties while also making a difference in people’s lives through charity,” the organisers said.
With free entry for all visitors, the festival ensures accessibility to anyone wishing to join. Parking is available at R20, while MVG members will enjoy free parking.
