Fatal Bus Crash Near O.R. Tambo International Airport Claims 12 Lives
A devastating bus accident near O.R. Tambo International Airport has claimed the lives of 12 people and left 45 others injured in the early hours of Tuesday morning, according to officials from the City of Ekurhuleni.
The tragic incident occurred at approximately 6:45 AM on Tuesday (March 11). Emergency responders quickly transported the injured to nearby medical facilities, including O.R. Tambo, Thembisa, and Edenvale hospitals, where they are currently receiving treatment.
“We are lost for words. This is a disaster,” said Councillor Andile Mngwevu, the MMC for Roads and Transport Planning in Ekurhuleni, who visited the scene shortly after the accident. “Our heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased, and our prayers for a speedy recovery to those who have been taken to various hospitals around the area.”
Visibly shaken by the scene, Mngwevu added, “To see so many bodies lying around is quite saddening, and the city really feels for the families who would have expected to see their loved ones return home later today.”
At this time, investigators have not determined whether other vehicles were involved in the crash. Police and relevant authorities are currently examining the scene to gather evidence and determine the cause of the accident.
The City of Ekurhuleni has vowed to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
