Former president Zuma released on medical parole
The Department of Correctional Services has released a statement confirming that former president Jacob Zuma will be released on medical parole.
According to the Department, the parole was due to the condition which the former statesman was under while incarcerated.
“Apart from being terminally ill or physically incapacitated, inmates that suffer from an illness that severely limits their daily activity or self-care can also be considered for parole,” said the Department.
This means that due to his present condition, former president Zuma will complete his term under strict supervision from the Correctional Services.
President Zuma was arrested after judgement was filed for his alleged violation of the Commission of Enquiry into State Capture, by formally not participating in further proceedings.
The Commission, led by acting Chief Justice Raymond Zondo, is at loggerheads with the former president, who has requested that the Chairperson recuse himself.
After news of the parole went viral on social media, the J.G Zuma Foundation said it will shed more information soon.
“The Foundation welcomes the decision of the Parole Board that H.E President Zuma should serve the rest of his sentence outside prison.
He is still in hospital right now.
A more detailed statement will be issued in due course after consultation with the legal team of President Zuma,” the organization tweeted
