Gauteng, Mpumalanga Braces for Heavy Storms and Flooding

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Yellow Level 4 weather warning for Gauteng, with significant impacts expected from this afternoon through midnight on Tuesday, December 2.

The warning indicates a medium likelihood of severe weather conditions including large hail, heavy downpours, and strong winds that could result in flooding across susceptible areas throughout the province.

According to the alert, residents can expect potential damage to both informal and formal settlements, hazardous driving conditions, and flooding of roads, low-lying areas, and settlements. Some bridges and roads may be forced to close as a result of the severe weather.

Emergency Services Ready to Respond

The City of Ekurhuleni’s Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) has confirmed that response teams are on high alert and prepared to assist residents.

“Aquatic teams, firefighters and rescue teams including disaster management officers are ready to render necessary assistance to the community at large,” said William Ntladi, DEMS District Manager and Media Liaison.

Safety Warnings for Residents

Authorities are urging communities to remain vigilant, particularly those living near rivers, flood-lines, and large trees, as both formal and informal settlements could be negatively impacted by floods, hail, and lightning.

With most students now on festive season break following the completion of the 2025 school year, Ntladi emphasized the importance of child safety.

“Parents and responsible adults are urged to take care of them and know their whereabouts. Flooded streams might sweep them away because of strong currents,” he stated

Residents experiencing life-threatening emergencies are urged to contact the City of Ekurhuleni Life Threatening Call Centre at 011 458-0911 for immediate dispatch of emergency response teams.
