Khutsong South Ext 2 Residents Raise Alarm Over Neglected Fallen Electric Pole

Khutsong South Ext 2 residents are growing increasingly concerned about a concrete electric pole that has been left unattended since early November 2024. Despite reporting the issue to the municipality via WhatsApp and telephone, they say no action has been taken.

The pole was knocked down after being struck by a car, according to eyewitnesses in the area. “The car crashed into the power line pole, and it fell,” one witness explained.

Residents have repeatedly reported the incident to the municipality, but claim their efforts have gone unanswered. “We sent the report via WhatsApp and called several times, but we haven’t received any response,” one frustrated community member told our reporter.

The fallen pole poses a serious safety hazard, with live wires exposed. A former Eskom employee in the area warned of the dangers: “Live wires can lead to fatal electrocutions. Beyond the immediate risk to life, the fallen pole has caused a power outage, disrupting electricity supply for local households.”

He emphasized the importance of keeping a safe distance from the area, especially for children. “Touching low-hanging power lines or fallen electrical structures can cause severe injuries or even death. There have been instances where children were seriously injured after unknowingly touching such wires while playing.”

The municipality initially responded via WhatsApp, stating: “We will make a follow-up with the electricity department. Your query has been referred to the relevant section and will be attended to within 72 hours. Your Ref number: Cc6/28/11/2024/20.” However, residents report that no action has been taken since then.

Local residents are urging the municipality to prioritize the repair of the pole before it leads to a tragedy.
