Loadshedding suspended as Eskom systems recover

National power supplier, Eskom has decided to suspend loadshedding from Saturday afternoon, May 7 as it recovers its generation capacity.

“The power system gas recovered to a point where can be stopped at 12:00 midday. Generation units at Matla, Majuba, Grootvlei and Kenal power stations as well as the non-commercial Kusile unit have returned to service this morning,” said the utility in a statement.

Eskom said it has also restored all their emergency reserves and are available to support the power grid next week.

Stage 2 loadshedding was implemented on Tuesday due to Eskom losing their generation units and resorting to using emergency reserves to keep the country’s lights on. On Friday, Loadshedding was lowered to Stage 1.

With the winter weather making its way to the country, the demand for electricity has been ever-increasing.

Eskom says the demand will lead to a constrained system throughout the season.

“We therefore urge all South Africans to continue using electricity sparingly,” said the utility.
