Mamelodi Sundowns have booked their spot in the MTN 8 semifinals after a hard-fought 1-0 win against Moroka Swallows at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Tshwane.

The clash was an entertaining showcase of the country’s best teams in the pre-season top-eight tournament.

Both teams observed a moment of silence for the late Ingle Singh, the founding member of Kaizer Chiefs.

Sundowns started the game with intensity, looking to take an early lead in the first few minutes of the game.

As both teams were battling to gain possession, Swallows was dealt with a blowback when their decorated defender Andile Jali, was given the red card for a dangerous tackle.

The Dube Birds showed their strength despite the handicap of one less player to keep a clean sheet throughout the first half.

Injury after injury

The paramedics at the Lucas Moripe Stadium had their work cut out when they kept coming to the pitch as injuries kept piling up.

In the 14th minute, Downs’ Khuliso Sailor Mudau got out and was treated for an injury. Mudau was subsequently replaced with Bathusi Aubaas.

Just before the break, Bongani Sam was stretchered off the field after an injury.

In the second half, the paramedics also cared for Swallows keeper Daniel Akpeyi and Thapelo Maseko.

Downs take lead

In just a few minutes in the second half, Sundowns managed to break the Dube Birds’ defence with a memorable shot from trusted striker, Themba Zwane.
