MEC Maile Allocates Additional R3.3 Billion to Boost Service Delivery in Gauteng

The announcement was made on Tuesday, December 2, during the tabling of the provincial Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement (MTBPS).

Maile said the Provincial Government remains committed to “protecting social services, supporting inclusive growth, and ensuring that every rand delivers tangible value” to residents.

He emphasised that the province is taking decisive steps to stabilise its finances while modernising operations to curb waste, fraud, and corruption.

The MEC also took time to welcome the Finance Minister’s MTBPS which signalled a hopeful economy for South Africa. He also acknowledged the President’s declaration of Gender-based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) as a National Disaster, saying all people must unite to fight the scourge.

Economic Outlook Positive

Speaking to Mapepeza during a media briefing held before his public address at the Gauteng Provincial Legislature, MEC Maile noted the broader economic environment remains strained, with the South African Reserve Bank projecting modest national growth of 1.3% in 2025.

Gauteng, however, maintains its position as the country’s economic hub, contributing R2.4 trillion to the national economy in 2024 — more than KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape combined.

“Gauteng contributes about R33 out of every R100 produced in the country,” Maile said.

To boost long-term growth, the province recently adopted the Gauteng City Region Economic Growth and Development Plan (GCR EGDP), focused on job creation, improving living conditions, and strengthening government capacity.

“We have a plan for the economy of Gauteng,” he emphasized.

Where the Additional R3.3 Billion Will Go

The adjustments budget allocates R2.2 billion directly to provincial departments, including:

  • Office of the Premier – R43.9 million, including R40.8 million to settle outstanding Life Esidimeni claims.
  • Health – R1.1 billion for goods and services and R90 million for infrastructure.
  • Education – R507.8 million for compensation of employees, scholar transport, nutrition and school safety.
  • Social Development – R103.9 million for infrastructure and goods and services.
  • Community Safety – R92.6 million to ease pressure on operational costs.
  • Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation – R10 million, including R6 million for the 2025 Summer Games.
  • e-Government – R400 million to upgrade the Gauteng Provincial Network and support critical IT services.
  • Infrastructure Development – R33 million for staffing and operational requirements.

Maile added that the province’s invoice management system — launched earlier this year to streamline payments — has processed 165,000 invoices worth R35.6 billion by November, with 83% paid within the 30-day period.

Water Security Remains a Priority

Responding to recent service delivery protests linked to water shortages across the province, MEC Maile welcomed Rand Water’s progress on the new System 5A water purification plant.

The facility will add 600 million litres of water per day to the province’s supply network once fully operational in December 2025.

“This intervention is essential for ensuring Gauteng’s water security and supporting economic stability,” Maile said, while urging municipalities to strengthen water governance at local level.

The MEC reiterated government’s commitment to addressing community frustrations and improving essential services across the province.
