All about the infamous Lions Tour
The British and Irish Lions Tour is a rugby union tournament contested every 12 years between the top international teams combined collectively from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
The tournament was first held in 1888.
The British and Irish Lions (‘the Lions”) is a rugby union team selected from players eligible for any of the Home Nations – the national teams of England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. The Lions are a Test side, and generally select international players.
The team currently tours every four years, with these rotating among Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa.
The loss of the planned Rugby World Cup 2023 affords SA Rugby the opportunity to use the British and Irish Lions Tour 2021 to create a Rugby World Cup-like atmosphere.
The British and Irish Lions Tour, 2021 is one of the single largest sporting events worldwide, considered to be in the tier behind only the Rugby World Cup.
The last encounter will be on Saturday, August 7, which will determine the winner of the series.
“May the Springboks continue to inspire the nation and go on to clinch the 3rd and Final Test,” said the ministry.
