Winnie Mandela honoured with street name

The William Nicol Drive that stretches across the Sandton CBD is set to have a new name from Tuesday, September 26.

The City of Joburg executive Mayor Councillor Kabelo Gwamanda will be officially unveiling the renamed road, now called the Winnie Mandela Drive.

The renaming of the street comes as the country celebrates the late ‘mother of the nation’ birthday on the same day.

According to the Office of the Mayor, the renaming initiative started in 2018 and was recently concluded through a council process.

Motorists have been informed that due to the launch, certain roads in the Sandton Central area will be closed.

In 2015, the lane was upgraded from a single carriageway to a triple carriageway aimed at improving access to Diepsloot, Fourways, Randburg and Tshwane.

The late struggle icon Mama Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, former partner of late Statesman Nelson Mandela, was honoured with The National Order of Luthuli in silver for her “excellent contribution to the fight for the liberation of the people of South Africa”
