Beauty Hub Academy brings hope to abuse victims

Gauteng Partners with Beauty Hub Academy to Provide Support for GBV Survivors

As the nation commemorates Women’s Month, the Gauteng Department of Social Development has joined forces with The Beauty Hub Academy to extend a healing touch to women at a shelter catering to victims of gender-based violence (GBV) in Springs, Ekurhuleni.

The event took place on Thursday, August 24, offering a moment of respite to these survivors, whose identities remain concealed for their protection.

Lerato Kamal, a Social Worker at the shelter, expressed her gratitude for the rejuvenating experience, highlighting its potential to rebuild confidence among survivors and foster positive self-esteem.

Kamal’s message of empowerment resonates widely, especially for those residing in GBV shelters. “Take each and every opportunity as it comes,” she urged, underlining the importance of leveraging skill development programs available within the shelters.”

Nail treatments, hairdressing, and massages were provided, with the aim of not only pampering the survivors, but also bolstering their self-assurance.

Bayeni Khulu, Supervisor of The Beauty Hub Academy, expressed their commitment to serving the vulnerable.

While their typical clientele consists of the elderly, Khulu emphasized the importance of collaborating with survivors of gender-based violence, noting the industry’s role in restoring people’s confidence and overall well-being.

Olga Phasha, a Social Worker under the GBV Unit at the Gauteng Department of Social Development Springs Office, shed light on the session’s therapeutic purpose.

By offering a pampering experience, the goal was to alleviate the stress resulting from the traumatic experiences these women have endured. Phasha further highlighted the shelters’ pivotal role in helping abused women reconstruct their lives beyond the cycle of abuse.

The initiative stands as a poignant reminder of the significance of holistic healing for survivors of gender-based violence, exemplifying the commitment of various organizations and entities to provide support and empowerment during Women’s Month and beyond.
