Ekurhuleni issues flooding alert

The City of Ekurhuleni’s Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) rescue teams, along with dedicated firefighters, are on high alert today following a relentless onslaught of heavy rain since the morning of Tuesday, November 7.

The teams have been diligently monitoring flood-prone areas throughout the city, which includes low-lying bridges, both informal and formal settlements situated near water streams, and the entire city where life-threatening emergencies could potentially surface.

In response to the ongoing weather conditions, the authorities have issued a series of safety recommendations to safeguard residents:

  • Parents are urged to collect their children from schools and ensure their safe journey home.
  • Pedestrians are advised to steer clear of flooded bridges where water levels reach ankle height.
  • Motorists are strongly encouraged to avoid crossing low-lying bridges submerged in water.
  • Drivers are urged to maintain a safe following distance and reduce their speed to prevent accidents.
  • The roadworthiness of vehicles is paramount, including well-maintained tire treads and functional wiper blades.
  • Littering is discouraged as it obstructs stormwater drain systems. Residents are reminded to refrain from littering at all costs.

In the event of a life-threatening emergency, the City of Ekurhuleni has established a dedicated emergency hotline.

Residents can reach out to (011) 458 0911, ensuring the prompt dispatch of the nearest rescue team to intervene.

The City of Ekurhuleni is dedicated to the safety and well-being of its residents during this period of severe weather conditions and continues to monitor the situation closely.
