NYDA launches data-free network to empower unemployed youth
The National Youth Development Agency in partnership with Technov8 unveiled YOMO, South Africa’s first youth-centred jobs app, at the Hector Pieterson Memorial & Museum in Soweto on Monday (September 1).
Designed to tackle the country’s urgent youth unemployment crisis, YOMO offers zero-rated access to data, accredited training, gig opportunities, mentorship and creative-economy tools.
“We’re not just launching a network, we’re launching a movement for youth empowerment. YOMO connects you not just to data, but to education, income, and a future,” said Jose André, CEO of Technov8.
Youth unemployment remains alarmingly high: according to Statistics South Africa, the youth unemployment rate (ages 15–34) held steady at 46.1 % in Q2 2025 —nearly half of young South Africans remain out of work.
Technov8 positions YOMO as a direct response to this crisis, relieving youth of choices between data for learning or transport to job interviews.
At the launch, Ndumiso Kubheka of the NYDA reflected on the venue’s significance: “By launching here, where the voices of youth demanded freedom in 1976, we are symbolically and practically enabling a new generation to demand their right to opportunity.” Ike Makae of Youth Life added, “Connectivity must include wellbeing. YOMO’s holistic approach signals a shift from passive consumption to active empowerment.”
YOMO will immediately roll out a national roadshow, bringing access directly to youth across provinces. It forms part of a broader ecosystem aligned with government, NGOs and corporate partners aimed at mainstreaming youth development.
With the rallying call #BeOnWithYOMO, the initiative calls on young South Africans to not only connect—but to learn, earn and create meaningful futures.
