Siyaya e-USA: South Africa qualifies for FIFA World Cup
Citizens couldn’t hold back his excitement when Bafana Bafana qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup following a stunning victory against Rwanda in Tuesday’s World a African qualifier at Mbombela Stadium.
South Africa secured a 3-0 win after leading 2-0 at half-time, securing them top spot in Group C and automatic qualification for next year’s FIFA World Cup set in the USA, Mexico, and Canada.
South Africa will make their first World Cup appearance since hosting the 2010 FIFA World Cup and its first time qualifying for the global showpiece since 2002.
They got off to the perfect start when Thalente Mbatha returned to the lineup and struck in the first five minutes as he powered through the gloves of Rwandan keeper Fiacre Ntwari to find the top corner.
Hugo Broos’ side dominated first-half possession and territory as Rwanda had no answers.
South Africa doubled their lead in the 26th minute when Orlando Pirates star Evidence Makgopa assisted Oswin Appollis, who sent the ball to the back of the net and hand the hosts a 2-0 lead at the break.
“Tonight, the boys played with heart, discipline and determination. This was a performance that showed maturity and pride. Coach Hugo Broos, his technical staff and every player in the squad deserve the applause of the entire nation – coming through undeterred by a setback that may have derailed campaigns of the past,” Minister McKenzie said.
With hope still on the line, Bafana Bafana extended their lead and secured the place in the goal showpiece. It was Makgopa’s header that secured Bafana Bafana a 3-0 victory and their place at next year’s World Cup.
The team’s emotions were palpable as the players were in tears after the win, overwhelmed by the realization that they had achieved their goal of qualifying for the World Cup and making the nation proud.
Shortly after Bafana Bafana’s triumph over Rwanda, President Cyril Ramaphosa joined the country in extending his congratulations to the boys.
“We look forward to our flag flying in Mexico, the United States and Canada among the banners of the world’s most skilled and motivated footballers. Well done to everyone on the pitch, on the bench and in the boardrooms who made this qualification a moment of pride,” the Presidency posted on social media.
