Bophelong resident Vincentia Makwe has marked a remarkable milestone—one year of sobriety. Her journey, filled with struggles and triumphs, serves as an inspiration to those battling addiction. From the depths of dependency on crystal meth to rediscovering her sense of purpose, Vincentia’s transformation is a testament to resilience and hope.
For seven years, addiction dictated the course of her life. The turning point came in a heartbreaking moment with her youngest child, then just three years old. “That is when it dawned on me that I had exposed my children to my bad habits,” she recalls. “If I didn’t change my ways, they could end up like me at a very young age or be taken away.”
Determined to create a better future for her children and fearing the possibility of losing them, Vincentia sought help. Through Social Development, she was referred to the Nigel Rehabilitation Centre in Ekurhuleni, where she spent three months on the road to recovery.
Currently, over a year into her sobriety, Vincentia is focused on rebuilding her life. She is studying at Dirang Ka Kagiso Skills Development Centre in Bophelong, where she is enrolled in a Hair and Beauty course covering hairdressing, nail care, massage, and foot treatment. “My life has completely changed since I have sobered up,” she says. “I no longer hang with the same crowd I used to. I am in school now, building towards a sustainable future with the skills the center is equipping me with.”
Vincentia envisions opening her own salon in her neighborhood, providing hair and nail services using the starter pack kit she will receive upon graduation. With gratitude, she acknowledges the support she has received on her journey.
“I would like to thank Social Development for giving me a second chance to be a better mother to my children and equipping me with skills to make an honest living.”
Her story is not just one of personal triumph but also a beacon of hope for those struggling with addiction, proving that with determination and the right support, a new beginning is always possible.
