Mzansi mourn football legend John Moeti
The South African Football Association (SAFA) and the Gauteng Provincial Legislature’s Portfolio Committee on Sports, Arts, Culture & Recreation are mourning the loss of legendary Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates midfielder John Moeti.
The news of his passing was confirmed by family spokesperson Victor Rakhale in the early hours of Monday morning (6 February 2023).
The passing of John Moeti has left a profound impact on the South African football community and beyond. His contributions to the sport will always be remembered, and his legacy will continue to inspire future generations of players.
Moeti was part of the Bafana Bafana national squad that won the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) under coach Clive Barker.
He had 29 caps for the national team and also played for Orlando Pirates, Dynamos, and SuperSport United.
“It is with profound sadness and a deep sense of loss that we inform you of the passing of John “Dungi” Moeti,” said Rakhale. “He succumbed to his illness in the early hours of this morning (6 February 2023) at home, surrounded by his family and brethren in prayer.”
SAFA President Dr Danny Jordaan expressed his condolences and offered support to the family. “The South African Football Association and I wish to convey our sincerest condolences and heartfelt sorrow to the family and friends of Dungi Moeti. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, loved ones and friends,” he said.
Honorable Thulani Ndlovu, Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Sports, Arts, Culture & Recreation, also shared his condolences. “On behalf of the Gauteng sports community we want to send our deepest condolences to the Moeti family, Orlando Pirates football club, the Gauteng province, and South Africa at large. Moeti served and encouraged many young soccer players to serve the nation with pride, dedication, and commitment. He will be missed by many, and may his soul rest in eternal peace,” Hon. Ndlovu said.
