The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has warned of widespread heavy rainfall and severe thunderstorms affecting large parts of the country from Friday into the weekend (September 4-6), with residents urged to remain alert as dangerous weather conditions are expected.
According to the latest forecast, scattered to widespread rainfall is expected across many provinces, with some areas facing an 80% chance of rain. The wet weather is forecast to continue into Saturday, raising concerns over flooding and storm-related damage.
SAWS has issued several impact-based warnings, including an Orange Level 5 Warning for severe thunderstorms in affected areas.
The storms could result in flooding of low-lying settlements and roads, strong damaging winds, large hail, fallen trees, damage to buildings, municipal service interruptions and dangerous lightning.
Additional Yellow Level 4 Warnings have been issued for severe thunderstorms and damaging winds, with the potential for localised flooding, transport disruptions and damage to temporary structures.
Motorists have been advised to exercise caution, particularly on flooded roads and routes exposed to strong winds.
Coastal communities have also been warned of damaging winds and rough sea conditions that could disrupt harbour operations and pose a danger to navigation at sea.
The weather service expects unsettled conditions to persist into the new week, although rainfall is forecast to become more scattered in some regions by Sunday and Monday.
Authorities are urging residents to monitor official weather updates, avoid crossing flooded roads and rivers, secure loose outdoor objects, and seek shelter when thunderstorms develop. Communities living in flood-prone areas are encouraged to remain vigilant and follow any instructions issued by local disaster management authorities.
