SAPS promotes 1 965 police officers to strengthen leadership
Of the 1 965 officers promoted, 863 are women and 1 102 are men
The South African Police Service (SAPS) has promoted 1 965 police officers to higher ranks, with the appointments taking effect on 1 October 2026.
The promotions form the first phase of about 3 000 post promotions planned for the current financial year. SAPS said a second batch is expected to be announced by 1 November 2026, subject to the completion of quality assurance processes.
The newly promoted members include 201 officers elevated from Lieutenant Colonel to Colonel, 622 from Captain to Lieutenant Colonel, 899 from Warrant Officer to Captain and 243 from Sergeant to Warrant Officer.
Of the 1 965 officers promoted, 863 are women and 1 102 are men.
Acting National Commissioner Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane said promoting members from within the organisation is an important investment in the SAPS workforce and helps build a motivated and performance-driven police service.
“These promotions are about more than changing ranks. They are about recognising the commitment, experience and contribution of our members, while creating opportunities for them to take on greater responsibility within the organisation. When our members see that hard work and performance are recognised, it strengthens morale and encourages a culture of excellence across the SAPS,” said Commissioner Dimpane.
She said those promoted are expected to use their experience and leadership to improve organisational performance and strengthen the quality of policing services provided to communities.
SAPS said the newly promoted officers are expected to lead by example, uphold the highest standards of integrity, accountability and professionalism, and remain committed to protecting and serving communities across South Africa.
The police service congratulated all the promoted members and urged them to embrace their new responsibilities in the spirit of service and leadership.
