A Johannesburg Rapid Rail Unit police officer and his brother have each been sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment for the attempted murder of two civilians in Tembisa.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) said Constable Kabelo Peace Maripane and his brother, Nape Maripane, were sentenced by the Thembisa Regional Court on 16 September 2026.
The incident took place in Makulong Section, Thembisa, during the early hours of 14 September 2019.
According to IPID, Nape Maripane allegedly threatened three friends who were walking in the area at about 2am with a service firearm before firing shots in their direction and leaving the scene.
IPID said the two brothers later returned to the area and allegedly opened fire on the three friends. Two of the victims sustained multiple gunshot wounds to their upper bodies and were taken to Tembisa Hospital for treatment, while the third victim escaped without injury.
The court found the Maripane brothers guilty on 25 May 2026 before handing down sentence on 16 September 2026.
IPID confirmed that Constable Kabelo Peace Maripane was off duty at the time of the shooting in 2019.
