Five Emfuleni Municipality employees arrested over alleged illegal electricity reconnection scheme

Preliminary investigations indicate that they allegedly operated an illegal scheme in which they posed as authorised municipal officials capable of reconnecting electricity supplies that had been disconnected by the municipality.

Five employees of the Emfuleni Local Municipality have been arrested by the Gauteng Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) in connection with allegations of fraud, theft and tampering with essential infrastructure.

The arrests were carried out during a takedown operation conducted in Vanderbijlpark on Friday, 21 August 2026.

According to police, the suspects are employed in the municipality’s Revenue and Electrical Departments.

Preliminary investigations indicate that they allegedly operated an illegal scheme in which they posed as authorised municipal officials capable of reconnecting electricity supplies that had been disconnected by the municipality.

It is alleged that municipal clients were instructed to pay money directly into the suspects’ personal bank accounts in exchange for the unlawful reconnection of their electricity.

Investigators further allege that the suspects reconnected electricity supplies without the municipality’s approval, enabling the illegal use of electricity and causing financial losses to the Emfuleni Local Municipality.

The Gauteng Political Killings Task Team said it remains committed to working with relevant stakeholders to ensure that public officials who abuse their positions for personal financial gain are brought to justice.

The five suspects are expected to make their first appearance in court on Monday, 24 August 2026.

Police confirmed that the investigation is continuing and warned that further arrests may follow as the case progresses.
