Gauteng motorists can now access faster and more convenient licensing services following the official launch of the new Smart Driver Licence Testing Centre (DLTC) at Gautrain Sandton Station.
Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport, Kedibone Diale-Tlabela, officially opened the state-of-the-art facility on Wednesday, describing it as another step towards modernising government services through technology and innovation.
Conveniently located at the Gautrain Sandton Station, the centre offers a full range of driver and vehicle licensing services. These include the renewal and replacement of driver’s licences, applications for Professional Driving Permits (PrDPs), changes to personal details, payment of AARTO traffic infringements, motor vehicle licence disc renewals, vehicle registration and licensing, as well as transfers of vehicle ownership.
According to the department, the Smart DLTC has been designed to reduce waiting times while providing faster, more efficient and customer-focused services. The facility brings essential government services closer to where residents live, work and commute.
Speaking at the launch, Diale-Tlabela said the new centre reflects the provincial government’s commitment to delivering modern and accessible public services.
“We are handing over this facility to the people of Gauteng for your benefit and convenience. We encourage you to make full use of the services available here, whether it is renewing your driver’s licence, your motor vehicle licence, or accessing other licensing services,” she said.
The centre operates from 08:00 to 17:00 on weekdays and 09:00 to 15:00 on Saturdays, making it easier for working residents to access services outside traditional office hours.
The Sandton facility is the seventh Smart Driver Licence Testing Centre in Gauteng. It joins similar centres at Umphakathi Mall, Denlyn Mall, Atteridgeville Mall, Protea Glen Mall, Maponya Mall and Gautrain Midrand Station.
The smart centres use advanced digital enrolment technology and cashless payment systems, allowing licence renewal transactions to be completed in around 10 minutes. Services are offered strictly by appointment, helping eliminate long queues, reduce paperwork and promote transparent, corruption-free service delivery. Law enforcement officers are also stationed at the facilities to ensure compliance with licensing regulations.
The Department of Roads and Transport said the initiative forms part of Gauteng’s Smart Mobility Programme, which aims to improve transport services through technology, while supporting the #AgaLeRona service delivery programme to expand access to licensing services in townships and other underserved communities.
