Sinkhole Forces Closure of R500 in Merafong, Department Urges Caution

The sinkhole is located on the R500 between Carletonville and Ventersdorp, approximately 400 metres from Red Cap and about one kilometre from Rooipoort Primary School.

The Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport has confirmed it is attending to a large sinkhole that has formed on the R500 in Merafong City Local Municipality.

In a statement, the Department said it is aware of the sinkhole and urged motorists to obey all road signs and traffic control measures in the area.

The sinkhole is located on the R500 between Carletonville and Ventersdorp, approximately 400 metres from Red Cap and about one kilometre from Rooipoort Primary School.

The section of road was temporarily closed in December 2025 after heavy rainfall exacerbated the collapse, creating a significant hazard for motorists. Traffic officials erected signage and barricades and created a detour route to redirect vehicles around the affected area.

According to the municipality, the formation was worsened by recent heavy rains. The area around the R500 is known for its dolomitic soil, meaning the formation of additional sinkholes cannot be ruled out. Three new sinkholes had been reported along the same route earlier in December following hail and heavy downpours.

Merafong has a long history of sinkhole activity. Khutsong alone has more than 209 sinkholes, which have damaged homes and led to the evacuation of classrooms.

The Department says its technical teams are assessing the extent of the damage. The road will remain closed until engineers confirm it is structurally safe to reopen.

Motorists are advised to:

Avoid the affected section where possible and follow the official detour.

Reduce speed and remain vigilant near the sinkhole. Report any new cracks or ground movement to the municipal call centre on +27 82 516 0794

Alternative routes, including the N14, are recommended for motorists travelling to Carletonville.
