SAPS opens applications for 5 500 police trainee posts

SAPS is inviting disciplined, service-driven and physically fit South Africans between the ages of 18 and 34 to apply. Applicants must have no criminal record or pending criminal cases.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has officially opened online applications for 5 500 police trainee positions for the 2026/2027 financial year, giving young South Africans an opportunity to pursue a career in law enforcement.

Applications opened on 21 October 2026 and will close on 13 November 2026.

SAPS is inviting disciplined, service-driven and physically fit South Africans between the ages of 18 and 34 to apply. Applicants must have no criminal record or pending criminal cases.

Applications can only be submitted online through the official SAPS eRecruitment portal at erecruitment.saps.gov.za. Prospective applicants must first create a profile, verify their email address and then complete the online application process. SAPS will also share a QR code linking directly to the application portal on its official social media platforms.

As part of this recruitment drive, SAPS is seeking applicants with qualifications that could strengthen specialised policing units. Graduates with qualifications in Law, Policing, Criminology, Law Enforcement, Forensic Investigation, Natural Sciences, Computer Science and Information Technology may be considered for placement in specialised divisions such as the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks), Detective and Forensic Services, and Crime Intelligence.

The recruitment process will also seek to improve representation by identifying suitably qualified applicants from underrepresented racial groups while remaining open to all racial groups and genders.

All applicants will undergo a comprehensive selection process that includes physical fitness assessments, psychometric and integrity testing, medical examinations and interviews. SAPS said these assessments are aimed at ensuring successful candidates possess the fitness, discipline, resilience and integrity required to serve and protect communities.

Successful recruits who hold an NQF Level 6 qualification or higher in a relevant field will complete six months of training at a SAPS training academy, while recruits without such qualifications will undergo the standard nine-month training programme.

Police trainees will receive a monthly stipend of R5 000 during their training.

SAPS said joining the police service offers young people an opportunity to contribute to the fight against crime, protect vulnerable communities and help build a safer South Africa.

The police have reminded applicants that the recruitment process is completely free and warned members of the public not to pay anyone for employment opportunities or promises of influence during the recruitment process.

Interested applicants are encouraged to submit their applications before the closing date of 13 November 2026.
