The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) has urged motorists to exercise extreme caution following persistent heavy rainfall that has caused dangerous driving conditions and localised flooding in parts of the city.
One of the worst-affected areas is the intersection of Siemert Road and Currey Street in Doornfontein, where several vehicles became submerged after floodwaters rapidly accumulated on the roadway.
JMPD officers were deployed to the scene to manage traffic, assist stranded motorists and redirect vehicles away from the flooded area.
Motorists travelling towards Doornfontein have been advised to use alternative routes and avoid the affected intersection wherever possible.
Authorities have warned drivers never to attempt crossing flooded roads or areas with deep standing water. Vehicles that become stranded not only place occupants at risk but can also obstruct emergency response vehicles and create additional safety hazards.
Road users are encouraged to reduce their speed, increase following distances and keep their headlights on while travelling in wet weather conditions. Motorists should also obey all temporary road closures, barricades and instructions issued by JMPD officers.
The public is urged to report stranded vehicles, dangerous road obstructions or rising water levels to the City of Johannesburg Emergency Call Centre on 011 375 5911.
JMPD has reminded residents that safety should remain the top priority during periods of heavy rainfall and has called on all road users to remain vigilant until weather conditions improve.
