Metro Condemns Fatal Shooting of Benoni Taxi Association Patrollers

MMC Mnguni also appealed to members of the public who may have information about the shooting to come forward and assist authorities with their investigations.

The City of Ekurhuleni has strongly condemned a deadly shooting incident that claimed the lives of five Benoni Taxi Association (BTA) patrollers and two other individuals.

The tragic incident occurred on Wednesday, June 17 along the N12 near the Holfontein off-ramp towards Etwatwa.

The Cityโ€™s Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Roads and Transport Management, Cllr Lindiwe Mnguni, expressed her condolences to the families, colleagues and loved ones of the victims, which included five BTA patrollers, a scholar transport driver and an e-hailing driver.

โ€œThe City of Ekurhuleni strongly condemns such incidents of violence and supports initiatives led by the Gauteng MEC to promote dialogue, cooperation and peace among taxi associations. Incidents of this nature threaten these efforts and place the lives of innocent people at risk,โ€ said Mnguni.

She described the shooting as a senseless act of violence that undermines ongoing efforts to create a safe, peaceful and stable public transport environment in Ekurhuleni.

โ€œViolence has no place in our communities or in the transport industry,โ€ she added.

The city has called on law enforcement agencies to act swiftly in investigating the matter and ensuring that those responsible are brought to justice.

MMC Mnguni also appealed to members of the public who may have information about the shooting to come forward and assist authorities with their investigations.

The incident comes amid ongoing efforts by provincial authorities and transport stakeholders to promote peace and stability within the taxi industry, which has periodically been affected by violent disputes.

Police investigations into the shooting are continuing.
