According to the MEC, the OR Tambo–Soncini Games promote social cohesion, nurture sporting talent and create opportunities for current and future generations.

Gauteng will host the 10th anniversary of the OR Tambo–Soncini Games on 24 and 25 October 2026, bringing together participants from South Africa and Italy in a celebration of sport, friendship, cultural exchange and international cooperation.

Ahead of the event, Gauteng MEC for Education, Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation Lebogang Maile wished all participants well and described this year’s games as a significant milestone marking a decade of strengthening relations between South Africa and Italy through sport.

He said the initiative continues to honour the legacy and values of anti-apartheid leader Oliver Reginald Tambo and Italian politician Giuseppe Soncini.

Maile said Oliver Tambo’s commitment to justice, peace, democracy and human dignity played a vital role in South Africa’s liberation struggle and continues to inspire the country’s democratic values. He added that the relationship between Tambo and Soncini demonstrates how friendship and solidarity can transcend national borders, language and culture.

According to the MEC, the OR Tambo–Soncini Games promote social cohesion, nurture sporting talent and create opportunities for current and future generations.

He also welcomed the Italian delegation, whose participation in the athletics programme highlights the international character of the games and the enduring partnerships built through shared values.

Maile said hosting the tournament across different parts of Gauteng will provide an opportunity to showcase the province’s communities, cultural diversity and tourism attractions.

He added that the games encourage young people to embrace teamwork, discipline, respect, perseverance and fair play—values that contribute to building inclusive and resilient communities.

The OR Tambo–Soncini Games will feature football, rugby and athletics competitions. Football matches will take place at Trezona Park, rugby at Hoërskool Florida and athletics events at Ruimsig Stadium.

Concluding his message, Maile wished all participants success and expressed hope that the games would be remembered as a celebration of sport, solidarity, heritage and international friendship.
