Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, has extended his heartfelt congratulations to Mamelodi Sundowns on their remarkable achievement in securing the CAF Champions League title.
The Minister described the victory as a testament to the club’s dedication, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to excellence. He added that Mamelodi Sundowns have once again demonstrated why South African football continues to compete at the highest level on the African continent.
“On behalf of the Government of South Africa and all football-loving South Africans, I congratulate Mamelodi Sundowns on this outstanding achievement. Your success has brought immense pride to our nation and serves as an inspiration to aspiring footballers across the country. You have flown the South African flag high and shown that through hard work, discipline, and teamwork, greatness can be achieved,” McKenzie said on Tuesday, May 27.
The Minister further commended the players, the technical team, the management, the supporters, and all stakeholders whose collective efforts contributed to this historic success.
โAs champions of Africa, Mamelodi Sundowns have not only written another memorable chapter in their illustrious history but have also strengthened South Africa’s standing in continental football,โ he said.
Gauteng congratulates Sundowns
Gauteng MEC for Education, Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Lebogang Maile, has also congratulated Sundowns for being crowned Champions League winners.
Premier Panyaza Lesufi went to the finals in Morocco’s capital city Rabat and joined his favorite team in the trophy ceremony.
In a statement, the MEC said the crowning of Mamelodi Sundowns as the winners of the CAF Champions League confirms that the team is unparalleled when it comes to continental competitions.
โWe are delighted that Masandawana have lifted the elusive trophy again after several attempts since 2016,โ he said.
MEC Maile further emphasised that the victory solidifies the Gauteng based teamโs stature in elite competitions and added that the fact that they finished second on the Betway premiership as well, is an illustration that they are high performance personified.
โSundowns has been consistent in form and performance throughout this journey and the people of Gauteng, and the country are inspired by this victory,โ concluded MEC Maile.
He added that sport remains a powerful tool of promoting social cohesion and nation building and its ability to surpass geographical boundaries and language barriers further positions it as a lever for cultural Diplomacy.
For their latest triumph, Sundowns have also secured a place in the forthcoming FIFA Intercontinental Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup.
