South Africa Seeks Stronger China-Africa Media Partnerships at Global Forum
The gathering brings together government representatives, media organisations, technology companies and industry leaders to explore the future of broadcasting and digital media across Africa and China
South Africa is set to strengthen its media and communications partnerships with China and other African countries as Deputy Minister in the Presidency Kenny Morolong participates in the 7th Forum on China-Africa Media Cooperation taking place in China from 19 to 21 August 2026.
Hosted by China’s National Radio and Television Administration, the three-day forum is being held under the theme, “Share Development Opportunities, Shape the Audio-Visual Future.”
The gathering brings together government representatives, media organisations, technology companies and industry leaders to explore the future of broadcasting and digital media across Africa and China.
According to the Presidency, Morolong’s participation forms part of South Africa’s broader efforts to deepen bilateral relations with China while strengthening cooperation between African nations in the rapidly evolving media and communications sector.
“The Deputy Minister’s participation forms part of South Africa’s broader efforts to strengthen South Africa-China and China-Africa cooperation in media and communications, while advancing a more balanced representation of Africa and the Global South in the international information environment,” the Presidency said in a statement.
During the visit, Morolong is expected to hold discussions with representatives of the Chinese government, media institutions, technology companies and fellow African delegates. The engagements will focus on expanding collaboration in key areas such as broadcasting technology, digital innovation, content production, artificial intelligence and media skills development.
The forum comes at a time when digital transformation is reshaping the global media landscape, creating new opportunities for content creators, broadcasters and technology developers. South Africa is expected to use the platform to explore partnerships that can strengthen the country’s broadcasting sector while supporting innovation and the responsible use of emerging technologies.
Among South Africa’s priorities at the forum will be strengthening China-Africa cooperation in media and broadcasting, promoting inclusive digital transformation and encouraging collaboration in artificial intelligence, digital content and other emerging technologies.
Government also intends to advance discussions on information integrity, ethical digital governance and the responsible application of new technologies to ensure innovation supports public interest and trusted communication.
Another key objective is to promote Africa as a producer of content, knowledge and innovation rather than simply a consumer of global media products. The country will also seek to deepen partnerships among African and Global South media institutions to encourage greater collaboration, skills development and the sharing of expertise.
The outcomes of the forum are expected to contribute to stronger international cooperation in broadcasting and digital communications while positioning African media organisations to play a more influential role in the global information ecosystem as technological innovation continues to transform the industry.
