Sedibeng TVET College students fly SA flag at WorldSkills Shanghai 2026
The event is regarded as the "Olympics of Skills" because it brings together top young professionals to demonstrate excellence in technical and vocational education and training.
Sedibeng TVET College is celebrating a major milestone as three of its students represent South Africa at the WorldSkills Shanghai 2026 competition in China, taking place from 22 to 27 September.
The students, Matumelo Mofokeng, Lwazi Mlambo and Sicelo Bholo, are among South Africa’s young skilled professionals competing against some of the world’s best in one of the biggest international skills competitions.
Matumelo will compete in the Hairdressing category, while Lwazi Mlambo and Sicelo Bholo will showcase their expertise in Mechatronics, a field that combines mechanical engineering, electronics, robotics and computer-controlled automation.
WorldSkills Shanghai 2026 has attracted more than 1,400 competitors from over 70 countries and regions, competing across a record 64 skills categories. The event is regarded as the “Olympics of Skills” because it brings together top young professionals to demonstrate excellence in technical and vocational education and training.
The competition challenges participants to complete practical tasks that reflect real workplace situations. Hairdressing competitors will be assessed on a range of techniques, including cutting, colouring, styling and creative design while working under strict international standards and time limits.
Mechatronics competitors will work in teams to assemble, programme, test and troubleshoot automated industrial systems using robotics, sensors and programmable logic controllers. Judges will evaluate accuracy, innovation, efficiency, teamwork and problem-solving abilities.
Beyond the competition floor, the students will have the opportunity to meet competitors from around the world, exchange knowledge and experience different cultures.
They will also gain exposure to the latest technologies, equipment and industry trends, helping them develop skills that can benefit South Africa’s growing manufacturing, engineering and service sectors.
Sedibeng TVET College said the achievement reflects the quality of training provided through its classrooms, workshops and practical learning environments. The college described the students’ selection as a proud moment, demonstrating that local talent can compete successfully on the global stage.
Representing South Africa at WorldSkills is considered one of the highest honours for young artisans and vocational students. Success at the event can open doors to international networking opportunities, career development and recognition from employers seeking highly skilled professionals.
As the competition gets underway in Shanghai, South Africans will be cheering on Matumelo Mofokeng, Lwazi Mlambo and Sicelo Bholo as they proudly carry both the national flag and the Sedibeng TVET College name onto the world stage.
