RAF reopens Hospital Service Centres to improve support for accident victims

The Fund emphasised that the Hospital Service Centres will offer consultation and public awareness services only

The Road Accident Fund (RAF) will expand its service footprint from 21 August 2026 with the phased reopening of Hospital Service Centres (HSCs) at selected public hospitals across South Africa, bringing support services closer to motor vehicle accident victims and their families.

The first phase of the rollout will see four Hospital Service Centres opening in Gauteng, Mpumalanga and the Free State on 21 August, with additional centres in the North West and Gauteng to follow shortly afterwards.

According to the RAF, the initiative forms part of its ongoing efforts to improve access to services by providing assistance at the point of care where accident victims receive medical treatment.

RAF service consultants will be stationed at participating hospitals to provide information on the Fund’s benefits and claims processes, respond to enquiries, and guide road crash victims and their families on the steps required to access RAF services.

The Fund emphasised that the Hospital Service Centres will offer consultation and public awareness services only,. Claim lodgement services, including the submission of new claims, will not be available at the centres until further notice.

The first hospitals to receive the reopened Hospital Service Centres from 21 August 2026 are:

  • Rob Ferreira Hospital – Mpumalanga
  • Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital – Gauteng
  • Steve Biko Academic Hospital – Gauteng
  • Bongani Hospital – Free State

The next phase will include:

  • JS Tabane Hospital – North West
  • Leratong Hospital – Gauteng

The RAF said the reopening of the Hospital Service Centres demonstrates its commitment to fulfilling its mandate of supporting road accident victims and claimants while improving the accessibility of its services.

The initiative forms part of the Fund’s broader turnaround strategy aimed at strengthening service delivery, improving operational performance and rebuilding public confidence.

Motorists and members of the public who require assistance can contact the RAF Contact Centre on 087 820 1111 from Monday to Friday between 07:45 and 16:00.
