Minister Condemns Alleged Rape of 12-Year-Old in Dobsonville

The case has been formally reported to the South African Police Service, who have since arrested the suspect. He remains in custody and is expected to appear in court soon.

Social Development minister, Nokuzola Sisisi Tolashe, has strongly condemned the alleged rape of a 12-year-old girl from Dobsonville, Gauteng.

The incident reportedly took place over the Easter weekend, where a 58-year-old man is accused of sexually assaulting the minor.

The case has been formally reported to the South African Police Service, who have since arrested the suspect. He remains in custody and is expected to appear in court soon.

In response, the Department of Social Development has deployed a team of social workers to provide psychosocial support and trauma counselling to the victim and her family.

Minister Tolashe expressed deep concern over the incident, describing it as part of the broader crisis of gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF) in South Africa. She urged members of the public to report such crimes and work collectively to protect vulnerable groups, particularly children.

The minister also reaffirmed governmentโ€™s commitment to safeguarding childrenโ€™s rights, as outlined in the Children’s Act 38 of 2005.

The Act guarantees fundamental rights for children, including access to parental care, basic nutrition, shelter, healthcare, social services, and protection from abuse and exploitation.

Government continues to call for stronger community vigilance and cooperation with authorities to combat crimes against women and children.
