As the world marks International Literacy Week (5-11 September 2026), literacy organisations across South Africa are encouraging children, parents and educators to embrace the joy of reading through new resources and community outreach programmes.
Puku Children’s Literature Foundation has launched its newly redesigned website making it easier for children, families and teachers to access quality books, stories and reading materials.
The e-commerce platform aims to help readers discover age-appropriate content while supporting literacy development across the country.
Nal’ibali welcomed the initiative, saying it is proud to support Puku’s efforts to build a stronger reading culture in South Africa.
“As Nal’ibali, we’re proud to support their work and their commitment to growing a culture of reading in South Africa,” the organisation said in a social media post.
To mark International Literacy Day, Nal’ibali and its partners are also taking reading directly to children in the across the country through a two-day literacy programme.
The campaign includes early childhood development (ECD) outreach activities, book distribution, storytelling sessions and a school literacy activation celebrating the importance of reading, language and South Africa’s rich cultural heritage.
Organisers say the initiative aims to inspire young readers while ensuring more children have access to books and literacy resources that can support their education and future success.
Members of the public, educators and parents are encouraged to explore the new Puku website at www.puku.co.za to discover books, stories and other reading resources suitable for children of all ages.
