Bafana Bafana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign got off to a disappointing start after South Africa suffered a 2-0 defeat to Mexico in the tournament’s opening match on Thursday.
The match was played at the iconic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, with kick-off taking place at 21:00. Captain Ronwen Williams led the South African side onto the pitch as they began their quest on football’s biggest stage.
For Bafana Bafana, reaching the World Cup was the culmination of four years of hard work and determination.
The highly anticipated clash kept supporters on the edge of their seats as South Africa looked to make a positive start in Group A.
However, the evening ended in heartbreak as Mexico secured a 2-0 victory, leaving South Africa searching for points in their remaining group-stage fixtures.
The occasion also carried special significance, marking exactly 16 years since South Africa, as hosts of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, opened the first World Cup on African soil against Mexico in Johannesburg.
Bafana Bafana will now shift their focus to their upcoming Group A matches as they look to keep their hopes of progressing to the knockout stages alive.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup is being co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico and runs from 11 June to 19 July 2026.
