South African Delegation Explores Future Technology Opportunities in China

The visit comes at a time when South Africa continues to battle high youth unemployment, with many young people struggling to access opportunities in the digital economy.

A South African higher education delegation attending the World Digital Education Conference in China has highlighted the growing importance of technology, innovation, and digital skills development as key drivers for the countryโ€™s youth employment and economic growth.

The delegation, led by Higher Education and Training Minister Buti Manamela, brought together representatives from across the Post-School Education and Training (PSET) sector, including universities, Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges, Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETAs), and funding institutions.

During the visit, the delegation toured the Huawei Research and Development Centre, where they explored the companyโ€™s advanced technological facilities and learned more about ongoing innovations shaping the global digital economy.

The research centre is regarded as one of the leading technology hubs in the world, with major focus areas including 5G connectivity, cloud computing, artificial intelligence (AI), and smart vehicle technologies.

Delegates were given insight into how these innovations are transforming industries such as education, manufacturing, healthcare, transport, and communication.

The visit comes at a time when South Africa continues to battle high youth unemployment, with many young people struggling to access opportunities in the digital economy.

Industry experts have repeatedly stressed the importance of equipping young South Africans with future-focused digital and technical skills to remain competitive in a rapidly changing global job market.

Minister Manamela said collaborations between South Africa and international technology leaders are important in ensuring that local institutions prepare students for the demands of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

The conference and site visit also highlighted the growing role that TVET colleges and universities can play in preparing young people for careers in emerging industries such as software development, cybersecurity, robotics, AI engineering, data analysis, renewable energy technology, and smart infrastructure management.

For South African youth, the exposure to global technology trends could open doors to several opportunities beyond traditional employment sectors. With digital transformation accelerating across Africa, there is increasing demand for skilled young professionals who can work in telecommunications, coding, app development, digital marketing, e-commerce, cloud services, and artificial intelligence systems.

Huawei has already partnered with several African institutions through training programmes, ICT academies, and scholarship initiatives aimed at developing digital talent. Such partnerships could assist South African students by providing access to industry certifications, internships, innovation hubs, and entrepreneurship support.

Experts believe that stronger investment in digital education could also empower young people to create their own businesses rather than rely solely on formal employment opportunities. Technology-based entrepreneurship is increasingly becoming a pathway for youth to develop startups in sectors such as fintech, online education, content creation, software solutions, and smart services.

The delegationโ€™s participation at the World Digital Education Conference further reflects South Africaโ€™s efforts to strengthen international cooperation in higher education and innovation. It also reinforces the countryโ€™s commitment to modernising its education system to better align with global technological advancements.

As the world continues to shift towards digital economies, the visit served as a reminder that South Africaโ€™s future competitiveness may depend heavily on how quickly its youth are equipped with the skills, resources, and opportunities needed to participate in the global technology landscape.
