The Gauteng Department of Health has issued a formal apology to approximately 500 student nurses across four provincial nursing colleges after administrative bottlenecks delayed their critical stipend payments.
The delay has sparked interim scheduling changes, prompting college management to send affected students on an immediate recess while the paperwork is sorted out.
Possible Payment Timeline Established
According to provincial health officials, Human Resources Management teams are currently capturing and verifying the necessary documentation. The files are being transferred directly to the Department of e-Government, which has been engaged to fast-track the transactions.
Students can expect relief early next week, with the department outlining the following timeline:
- Tuesday, 2 June 2026: The transactions are scheduled to be processed during the official payment run.
- Thursday, 4 June 2026: Funds are expected to officially reflect in the students’ bank accounts.
Academic Recovery and Recess Adjustments
To offset the disruption, stakeholders have agreed on a comprehensive academic recovery strategy to ensure training standards remain uncompromised.
Affected students are expected to return to their respective colleges on Monday, 8 June 2026.
Upon their return, the curriculum will be adjusted as follows:
A total of 40 hours of academic time will be recovered over a five-week period.
This extra time will be specifically allocated to fulfill outstanding clinical placement requirements.
The department confirmed that these adjustments will not impact or reduce the standard July recess, to which students remain fully entitled.
Curriculum Master Plans are being dynamically revised to ensure all academic milestones are successfully met.
“The Backbone of Healthcare”
The department expressed deep regret over the administrative oversight, acknowledging the severe inconvenience it has caused to the trainees.
“Nurses remain the backbone of the healthcare system and play a critical role across the entire healthcare value chain,” the department noted in its statement, emphasizing its commitment to resolving the issue with the utmost urgency.
